Play sound

This work consists of a series of photographs and a 5-minute looping soundtrack. The geographical point of departure is a Copenhagen backyard where all sounds and photos are recorded and shot. The soundtrack is a composition using the field recordings to create a condensed sound scape. In sequences of photographs activities and movements through the backyard are traced.

The backyard (Vesterbrogade 107 B) is situated in the Vesterbro area of Copenhagen. It is a former working class district now inhabited by a more or less mixed population of students, middle-eastern merchants, young families and hipsters, currently undergoing increased gentrification.

During the 24 hours of the day, the spaces of the city are occupied and used by various people (and animals) in various ways. This backyard is a place with different functions during such a time span: the buildings surrounding the backyard are the setting for residence, work and cultural activities. The backyard is a field where paths cross though encounters do not necessarily happen. The sounds of the backyard are signals of the daily rhythm of the place, and when there is no signal, only background noise remains. The signals tell of the events in the backyard, which set it apart from the neighboring yard, and the one next to that one.
