Five sentences on The Electric Light Newspaper,
Copenhagen Town Hall Square (November 2001)

In collaboration with Sofie Hesselholdt,
Vibeke Mejlvang & Nynne Haugaard.

The focus of the project was to analyze the ways mass media select, angle and manipulate news. The Electric Light Newspaper on Copenhagen Town Hall Square is owned by one of the main Danish tabloids and is viewed by thousands of people every day. It conveys the news in a short and very dramatic form, which we found interesting to deconstruct. We analysed the language of the headlines displayed throughout one month and created five new sentences which were shown randomly among the other news.

“Tonight: Tunnel accident cluster bombs military support resulting in impure water”

“Tax-free disabled person unravelled: Suspicion of masked mayor”

“Family reunion involved in sanitary appliances: Fringe benefit considers idiot-activation”

“Sensation leads the citizens through disgusting revenge attack on intolerance”

“Tragically angry speed hogs hit the xenophobia queue”
