The video has its geographical starting point in Trekroner, a newly built university town near Roskilde, 30 km west of Copenhagen. The project “Outline – Tales about art and the new city” was initiated by Roskilde municipality, and during the building process artists were invited to collaborate with architects, engineers and city planners. The recordings for the video took place during spring 2003 when I stayed in a student flat in Trekroner.

The video concerns the process of moving to a new place, occupying a territory and making it your own. It deals with the family furnishing a new house, having new neighbours and the problems and thoughts arising while living many people together in a collective. The idea was to document the very short history of the new town and to catch some of the many thoughts, dreams and expectations people have when moving to a new place.

The Guy Next Door, He’s Just The Neighbour is a video essay consisting of interviews, video footage, still photographs, text and drawings. The video contains music by System, Opiate, Melk and k.i.o.l. and has a circular narrative structure following the 24 hour of the day.
