Play excerpt

The installation Sneakers in the Sky explores an urban phenomenon found in many American cities. Shoes are seen hanging in power cables, trees and light poles. The shoes appear as signs in urban space, but the readings are innumerable.

The material for the project was collected in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The phenomenon is examined through photography and sound recordings, and the work investigates the readings spanning from transitional rites, marking of territory, drug sales, to mere kids play.

The installation consist of 81 looping slides. Related to forensic material, the 81 photos represent an archive of the hanging shoes. The soundscape of the installation is a multilayered montage of interviews and recorded sounds.
