About Women Down the Pub
Women Down the Pub (in Danish, Kvinder på Værtshus) is a group of visual artists collaborating on issues of gender politics, representation, and language. Besides organized events and actions, we have participated in exhibitions, held workshops, collaborated with various organizations and produced publications on feminist projects.
One of our latest projects is the book "VIEW - Feminist Strategies in Danish Visual Art", presenting a broard range of feminist strategies in Danish visual arts since the late 1960's. In the book we have gathered information about feminist strategies in Danish visual art through the last forty years. By collecting, editing and publishing a collection of writings and works by women artist from the 60s until today, the book is an attempt to both tracing and re-writing a somewhat forgotten part of Danish art history, as well as inserting the many-folded discourse this project presents into a contemporary framework in which to read and continue the discussions.
Another large project we have done is www.sexogpenge.dk, a homepage for out-lets on the subject of sexist commercials, where Women Down the Pub took the discussion further and confronted the responsible companies with all the angry mails written to our homepage, by both men and women.
In summer 2000, we made Herstories Tour, an alternative sightseeing boat tour in the harbour of Copenhagen. The purpose of the project was to identify the gendered inscription of urban space, create an alternative reading of the city, challenge traditional history and question the objectivity of historical writing. To do so, the project focused on various women’s life stories and outlined the complexities of city planning and gender.
